Veteran Upgrade Looming as Broncos Offense Stalls Despite Winning Record

The Denver Broncos find themselves in a strange position where victory feels like a mask for deep systemic issues. While the team sits comfortably at 4-2 after a gritty win over the Seattle Seahawks, the performance of quarterback Bo Nix has become impossible to ignore. Coming off a fractured ankle from last season, Nix appears to be struggling significantly with his rhythm and decision making. His latest outing was particularly alarming, managing only 107 passing yards across 27 attempts in a game where the offense sputtered to its lowest yardage total in a win since 1983.

The frustration reached a boiling point following Thursday night’s contest, with former NFL veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick describing Nix’s current level of play as almost disrespectful to the game. With Denver averaging just 19 points per game and ranking near the bottom of the league in scoring, critics argue that the team is winning despite their quarterback rather than because of him. This stagnation has led analysts to suggest that head coach Sean Payton might need to look beyond his young starter if he wants to turn this promising start into a genuine postseason run.

One tantalizing possibility emerging ahead of the November 10 trade deadline is Kirk Cousins. Currently leading the Las Vegas Raiders, the four-time Pro Bowler remains highly productive with twelve touchdowns and only four interceptions this year. However, the Raiders are facing a brutal stretch of upcoming opponents, including Buffalo and San Francisco, which could potentially derail their season and leave them open to moving on from Cousins in favor of younger talent like Fernando Mendoza.

While Sean Payton hasn’t signaled any intention to move away from Nix—who still holds the distinction of having more wins than any other 2024 draft pick quarterback—the pressure is mounting. Acquiring a seasoned vet like Cousins would provide an immediate spark to an offense currently operating on fumes. Whether Denver chooses to stick with their recovery project or pivot toward established leadership will likely determine if they remain contenders or simply fade away once their luck runs out in close games.
