Jena Bishop entered the WinTrust Arena on Friday night with a point to prove and walked out as the new PFL women’s flyweight champion. Facing off against veteran Liz Carmouche for the vacant title, Bishop found herself fighting not just an opponent, but the ghost of their previous encounter where Carmouche secured a knockout victory. Despite being viewed as the underdog heading into the rematch, Bishop managed to weather an early storm and grind out a hard fought win through five grueling rounds.
The contest began with Carmouche asserting her dominance, nearly finishing Bishop in the opening frame. However, as the fight progressed into the second and third rounds, the tide shifted dramatically. It appeared that a difficult weight cut had taken its toll on the forty two year old Carmouche, who faded significantly while Bishop took control from the back and threatened several submissions. The momentum swung once more in the fourth round when Bishop hit her own wall of exhaustion, allowing a resurgent Carmouche to reclaim top position and land significant strikes.
The final round provided a dramatic conclusion as both fighters battled through fatigue. While Carmouche showed surprising energy late in the game, a momentary lapse in judgment allowed Bishop to secure a crucial takedown. From there, Bishop dominated much of the closing minutes, relentlessly hunting for a rear naked choke that almost ended the fight moments before the bell. The judges saw it clearly, awarding Bishop a unanimous decision victory across all three scorecards.
While celebrations were short lived for the new champion, a familiar face quickly crashed the party. Dakota Ditcheva entered the cage immediately following the announcement to stare down Bishop, reminding everyone of her own TKO victory over Jena earlier this year. With gold now around Bishop’s waist, a high stakes rematch between these two rivals is already set for next year to determine who truly rules the division.
