Elon Musk has long been known for pushing the boundaries of transportation, but his latest unveiling at a Texas testing facility may be his most ambitious yet. During a high energy demonstration at the SpaceX headquarters, Musk introduced the Tesla Roadster 2, claiming it is effectively the world’s first flying car. By integrating aerospace technology from SpaceX, the vehicle utilizes powerful thrusters that allow it to perform aerial maneuvers reminiscent of a rocket rather than a traditional automobile.
The presentation featured a remote controlled prototype that stunned onlookers by driving up a curved ramp and gripping the ceiling via suction before flipping through the air to land safely. In another display of power, the car used its jet propulsion to leap entirely over a row of current Tesla models before accelerating from zero to sixty miles per hour in under one second. Musk described the machine as capable of performing rolls and complex gymnastics, though he admitted during his speech that such feats might not be legal in every jurisdiction.
Despite having previously expressed skepticism about flying vehicles back in 2014, Musk seems fully committed to this new vision. He noted that while the current prototype isn’t optimized for safety, it pushes the excitement factor to its absolute limit. The goal remains to deliver an electric sports car that provides a definitive blow to gasoline powered engines when it officially enters production in 2028.
Prospective buyers are already eyeing several tiers of ownership according to updated reservation details on Tesla’s website. While a standard performance version requires a fifty thousand pound deposit, those seeking the thrust capabilities must put down two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. For an elite few, an invite only single seater rocket variant offering full flight systems is also available, although Tesla clarified that these flights are strictly prohibited on public roads.
