Tesla recently reminded the world why it remains the king of the spectacle, unveiling a conceptual flying version of the Roadster during a high energy livestream. The Rocket Edition promised an adrenaline rush, demonstrating a sequence where the vehicle drove up a halfpipe and performed a kickflip before gliding back down via SpaceXAI thrusters. However, the excitement comes with a steep price tag and plenty of fine print, as reservations require a five hundred thousand dollar deposit for a car that might not exist until 2028 and may never actually be road legal.
While some luxury buyers are happy to gamble half a million dollars on a vague promise of future flight, Ikea decided to offer an alternative for those who prefer their transportation grounded in reality. Known for its ability to pivot quickly on cultural trends, Ikea Taiwan took to social media to launch a cheeky counter campaign against Elon Musk’s ambitious machine. Their solution for aspiring aviators doesn’t involve rocket science or venture capital, but rather a few household staples found in any suburban warehouse store.
In an Instagram post that directly mirrored Tesla’s own captions, Ikea suggested that customers simply pair a twelve dollar ninety nine cent set of Lillabo toy cars with a Brokglim bath towel. By labeling this makeshift contraption as safe and affordable while adding the phrase real life baby, the furniture giant effectively mocked the exclusivity and uncertainty surrounding the Roadster project. It is a classic piece of guerrilla marketing that pits Swedish practicality against Silicon Valley extravagance.
Though it lacks integrated suction systems or compressed air thrusters, Ikea’s low cost flyer relies on something far more reliable than speculative engineering: childhood imagination. While adults argue over deposits and delivery dates for futuristic concepts, children can start their aviation careers immediately using towels and plastic toys. Whether these homemade gliders will ever achieve orbit remains doubtful, but they certainly come with much better warranties than a pre order for 2028.
