The college football landscape shifted significantly this week as the Selection Committee released its first rankings for the 2026 season. In a historic turn for the program, the Miami Hurricanes have claimed the number one spot for the first time in school history, becoming only the eleventh team ever to open a season at the summit. Their perfect 8-0 start also marks the first time an ACC team has held the top position since Clemson did so in 2017, signaling a potential power shift in the national title race.
While all eyes are on Miami, several other programs are celebrating milestone achievements. Utah has climbed to number three, marking the highest ranking in its history, while Kentucky has surged to number six to set a new program record. Even Houston found itself making history, debuting at number seventeen, which edges out their previous best showing. Meanwhile, Alabama and Ohio State continue their unprecedented streak of consistency, remaining the only two programs to appear in every single one of the seventy-three editions of the committee’s rankings since the system began in 2014.
The road to the championship remains volatile, and history suggests that an early lead is no guarantee of success. Only two teams that started the season ranked first have gone on to win the National Championship during the playoff era. The committee continues to evaluate teams based on a holistic profile including strength of schedule and head-to-head results rather than relying on any single metric. As these twelve-team bracket hopes intensify, fans will have to wait until November 10 to see if Miami can maintain its grip on the top spot or if Georgia, currently sitting at number two, can close the gap.
