Football fans might want to settle in for a long evening this Thursday when the Carolina Panthers and Green Bay Packers kick off Week 8. While viewers usually tune in for high scoring or defensive standoffs, this particular matchup suggests a different kind of drama is brewing. Based on current statistics, the game is shaping up to be less about strategic plays and more about how many yellow flags can fit on the turf.
The numbers paint a frustrating picture for both coaching staffs. The Packers currently hold the dubious honor of being the most penalized team in the league, averaging over nine infractions per contest. They are matched up against a Panthers squad that ranks fourth in total penalties and actually leads the NFL in penalty yards surrendered each game. When you combine two teams that struggle so significantly with discipline, the likelihood of constant stoppages becomes almost a certainty.
Adding fuel to the fire is the assignment of official Scott Novak and his officiating crew. Novak’s group has developed a reputation for having a very short fuse, leading the entire league in both penalties called and accepted per game. With an average of twenty calls per outing, they aren’t known for letting the small things slide, which creates a perfect storm when paired with two undisciplined rosters.
Given these variables, spectators should prepare for a choppy rhythm and plenty of dead time during broadcasts. If history holds true and Novak maintains his aggressive approach toward these two mistake prone teams, the clock may move slowly throughout the night. It would be wise for fans to get some extra rest before kickoff, because this game looks like it could stretch well into the late hours_
