Texas emerged from a chaotic clash with number seven Ole Miss with a 34-27 victory on Saturday, but the win left Longhorn fans more anxious than celebratory. For the first half of the contest, Arch Manning looked every bit the blue chip prospect NFL scouts adore, leading Austin to a commanding 24-3 advantage. It seemed as though the Longhorns were cruising toward a dominant shutout until the second half began, triggering a familiar and frustrating pattern of collapse that has plagued Steve Sarkisian’s squad throughout the season.
The momentum shifted violently in the third quarter as Texas suddenly forgot how to move the chains, managing a dismal 19 yards of offense while watching Ole Miss surge back. The turning point arrived when a sack of Manning resulted in a fumble returned for a touchdown, sparking a run of 21 unanswered points for the Rebels. As Manning struggled with interceptions and inaccurate passes, Trinidad Chambliss took over for Ole Miss, transforming the stadium atmosphere from confidence to pure dread.
Despite the meltdown, Texas managed to find their footing in the fourth quarter, flipping a mental switch to reclaim control and secure a narrow lead. The drama peaked in the final moments when Ole Miss recovered an onside kick and drove deep into Longhorn territory. Only a desperate final heave into the arms of a Texas defender saved the day, ending what Manning described as an evening spent praying for his defense to come up clutch.
While the result stays in the win column, the performance leaves serious questions about whether Texas can actually be classified as elite. With high stakes games against Missouri and LSU looming on the horizon, coach Steve Sarkisian must figure out why his offense fluctuates so wildly between brilliance and dysfunction. Until they can avoid these late-game scares, Austin remains trapped in a cycle of uncertainty regarding which version of this team will take the field each week.
