Donald Trump is facing a sweeping legal challenge following a lawsuit filed Thursday that accuses him of violating the U.S. Constitution to secure massive payouts from a foreign power. The complaint, lodged in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, targets the president along with his close associate Steve Witkoff and World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency venture linked to the Trump family. At the center of the dispute is an allegation that Trump corruptly profited from more than two billion dollars in deals involving officials from the United Arab Emirates.
The lawsuit was brought forward by Joel Greenberg, a shareholder in Circle Internet Group, a competing crypto firm that claims it suffered financial losses due to these arrangements. Greenberg argues that Trump breached the Foreign Emoluments Clause by accepting payments from a foreign government without necessary congressional approval. According to court documents, the Trump family sold nearly half of World Liberty Financial for five hundred million dollars to an entity backed by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a top UAE security advisor, just days before the presidential inauguration.
Further allegations suggest a complex web of financial maneuvers designed to inflate the value of Trump’s digital assets. The suit highlights an investment fund chaired by Tahnoon that poured billions into Binance shortly after Trump took office, utilizing a stablecoin launched by World Liberty Financial to facilitate those transactions. Greenberg asserts that such actions demonstrate a brazen disregard for public trust and constitutional law in favor of personal enrichment.
While the White House has yet to provide an official response to these specific accusations, the timing coincides with other controversial moves in the crypto space, including Trump’s recent pardon of Binance founder Changpeng Zhao. As the case moves through the federal court system, it threatens to ignite another intense debate over whether the boundaries between private business interests and executive authority were illegally crossed during this administration.
