Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium felt less like a typical NFL game and more like a revolving door for head coach John Harbaugh, who seemed to reach his breaking point with several key players. The most glaring absence on the field was running back Cam Skattebo, who spent nearly the entire contest watching from the sidelines. Despite Harbaugh denying that it was a formal benching, Skattebo failed to record a single carry despite appearing in the game, likely a consequence of a season plagued by four fumbles. For Skattebo, the message was clear: he is currently residing in the coach’s doghouse until someone can reliably handle the football.
While the ground game remained stagnant, producing a meager 84 yards of offense, the real story unfolded under center. After an ineffective performance from Jameis Winston, who threw two interceptions and struggled to move the chains, Harbaugh turned to J.J. McCarthy in the fourth quarter. The former Vikings player seized his opportunity with both hands, throwing for 243 yards in just the final eleven minutes of play. Although the Giants ultimately fell 34-27 after erasing much of a massive deficit, McCarthy provided a spark that had been missing all afternoon.
The sudden shift has left New York fans and media wondering if a permanent change at quarterback is imminent. When pressed after the game about whether Winston would retain his starting role, Harbaugh pointedly avoided giving a definitive answer. While he praised Winston’s competitive spirit and fighting nature, he stopped short of guaranteeing him another start, instead noting that McCarthy did a heck of a job given the circumstances. It suggests that while no official announcement has been made, the door is wide open for McCarthy to take over as the face of the franchise moving forward.
As for the backfield, Harlem’s frustrations extend beyond just one player. With Najee Harris, Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary also rotating through active roles, Harbaugh admitted that nobody has yet taken charge of the position. The coaching staff is essentially treating the running back rotation as an open audition, demanding that one individual step up and claim ownership of the role. Between a looming quarterback controversy and a chaotic scramble for carries in the backfield, it appears Harbaugh is determined to shake up his roster regardless of whose feelings get hurt along the way.
