Updated 17 October 2026. Spot gold ended Friday 16 October near $4,166 an ounce (Trading Economics), little changed on the day, while December COMEX futures closed around $4,186.70 (Investing.com). Brent crude settled at $109.86, its highest since May, and the US 10-year yield rose to about 5.11 percent. Verdict: $110 oil is an inflation risk the Fed cannot ignore, but October hike odds have collapsed, which leaves gold boxed between $4,100 and $4,240 for a quiet data week. Reference levels: $3,970 below, $4,330 above.
Key facts
- Friday close, 16 October: spot gold $4,166.39, down 0.11 percent on the day (Trading Economics). FXStreet had XAU/USD near $4,163 late in the US session, and Kitco, cited by The Rio Times, showed about $4,168. December futures closed around $4,186.70, in a $4,168.00-$4,219.95 range (Investing.com).
- The week: gold fell toward $4,073 on 14 October after the hot September CPI and closed near $4,100 on Wednesday. It gained 1.6 percent on Thursday and recovered most of the week’s loss by Friday (FXStreet, Eren Sengezer).
- Yields and the dollar: the US 10-year Treasury yield rose about 3 basis points to 5.106 percent on Friday, while the US Dollar Index slipped about 0.1 percent to 101.87 (FXStreet, Christian Borjon Valencia).
- Fed odds for 27-28 October: money-market pricing put an October hike at about 16 percent, down from near 60 percent after the CPI release, with December at about 89 percent (Prime Terminal via FXStreet). FXStreet’s weekly forecast put the CME FedWatch reading at about 10 percent after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s IMF remarks, down from about 40 percent after CPI.
- Inflation backdrop: September CPI rose 3.7 percent from a year earlier against 3.6 percent expected, and producer prices rose 6.3 percent. Energy drove both prints.
- Oil: Brent settled at $109.86 on Friday, up 3.7 percent on the day and 4.9 percent on the week (Reuters via TokenPost).
- Record high: $5,597.23 on 29 January 2026 (Forbes Advisor). Gold is about 26 percent below that peak.
Why $110 oil did not lift gold
Gold is often described as an inflation hedge, so a 3.7 percent jump in oil to a five-month high might be expected to help it. On Friday it did the opposite and drifted lower. The reason is the bond market. Higher energy prices feed straight into the inflation numbers the Fed is watching, so traders pushed the 10-year yield up to about 5.11 percent. A higher yield on Treasuries makes a metal that pays nothing less attractive.
That is the same pattern as the rest of the week. As we covered in gold after the hot PPI and retail sales data, gold has been trading on yields, the dollar and the Fed path, not on the inflation headlines themselves.
The Fed is the swing factor, and it has gone quiet
The biggest change this week was in rate expectations. After the CPI release, markets priced a real chance of a second hike in two meetings. Warsh then declined to pre-judge the October meeting at his IMF appearance in Bangkok, and odds of an October move fell to between 10 and 16 percent depending on the measure. We tracked that swing in our Fed odds explainer.
December is a different story. With about 89 percent priced for a December hike, the market has not dropped the idea of tighter policy. It has only pushed it back. FXStreet analysts noted that the high December odds can keep any gold rebound capped.
The Fed is now in its blackout period before the 27-28 October meeting, so there will be no Fed speakers next week. FXStreet’s weekly forecast lists no high-impact US data either. The only notable release is the preliminary S&P Global manufacturing and services PMI for October on Friday 23 October. That leaves oil and yields to drive gold.
Gold week ahead: bull, base and bear
| Scenario | Gold | What has to happen | Anchor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bear | $3,970 | Oil holds above $110, the 10-year yield keeps climbing and markets rebuild October hike bets. Gold breaks $4,100 and the 14 October low near $4,073. | FXStreet’s $4,000-$3,970 support zone, the end-point of the March-August downtrend. About 4.7 percent below Friday’s close. |
| Base | $4,100-$4,240 | A quiet week with no Fed speakers. Oil stays near $105-$112 and yields steady. | FXStreet’s $4,100 static support below, the 20-day and 100-day moving averages at $4,190-$4,240 above. |
| Bull | $4,330 | Oil eases on a calm weekend in the Gulf, yields fall back below 5 percent and the dollar weakens. Gold clears the 100-day average at $4,242. | The 23.6 percent Fibonacci retracement and 50-day moving average at $4,300-$4,330 (FXStreet). |
The bear case sits below Friday’s $4,166 close. The levels are technical reference points measured from the verified close, not price forecasts. Gold trades below its 20-, 50-, 100- and 200-day moving averages, and the daily RSI is below 50 (FXStreet).
What to watch next week
- Brent and the weekend: oil reopens on Sunday evening. A move further above $110 would push yields up again. A fall back toward $105 would ease the pressure. See our Brent coverage.
- The 10-year yield: a hold above 5.1 percent keeps rallies short. A drop below 5 percent opens the bull case.
- The dollar index: it closed Friday near 101.87. A move back above 102.5 would weigh on gold.
- Friday 23 October: preliminary S&P Global PMIs, the only notable US release of the week.
- 27-28 October: the FOMC decision. The Fed raised rates to 3.75-4.00 percent on 16 September.
Quick take: gold ended the week near $4,166 after recovering most of its CPI loss. Oil at $110 is pushing yields up, which caps rallies, while October hike odds have fallen to 10-16 percent. With the Fed silent and almost no US data due, expect a $4,100-$4,240 range. Higher oil and yields open $3,970. Cooler oil and a yield drop below 5 percent open $4,330.
FAQ
What is the gold price today?
Spot gold closed Friday 16 October 2026 near $4,166 an ounce (Trading Economics). December COMEX futures closed around $4,186.70 (Investing.com). Markets reopen on Sunday evening.
Why didn’t gold rise when oil hit $110?
Higher oil raises inflation expectations, which pushed the US 10-year yield up to about 5.11 percent. Higher yields make non-yielding gold less attractive, so the metal edged lower on Friday.
Will the Fed hike rates on 28 October?
Markets see it as unlikely. Money-market pricing put an October hike at about 16 percent on Friday, and FXStreet cited a CME FedWatch reading of about 10 percent. A December hike is priced at about 89 percent.
What economic data comes out next week?
Very little. The Fed is in its pre-meeting blackout, and the only notable US release is the preliminary S&P Global PMI for October on Friday 23 October.
Can gold get back above $4,200?
The first hurdle is the $4,190-$4,240 zone, where the 20-day and 100-day moving averages sit (FXStreet). A close above it would open $4,300-$4,330.
Where is support for gold?
$4,100 first, then the 14 October low near $4,073, then the $4,000-$3,970 zone. A break of that zone would leave the July lows near $3,959 and the yearly low at $3,941 (FXStreet).
