Brooklyn prosecutors have successfully crippled a massive international cryptocurrency scam that preyed on Russian speakers, pulling the plug on 112 servers and over two hundred web domains. District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced the operation on Wednesday, revealing that his office’s specialized Virtual Currency Unit worked alongside the FBI to execute search warrants across three different time zones. The network was a sprawling digital architecture utilizing hosting services in both the United States and Eastern Europe, specifically relying on infrastructure located in Ukraine to hide its tracks.
The scheme operated like a well oiled machine, often beginning with deceptive Russian language advertisements on Facebook. Once victims expressed interest in these supposed investment opportunities, they were contacted by fake advisors who guided them through the process of opening accounts and transferring cryptocurrency to fraudulent platforms. For several weeks or months, victims believed their portfolios were growing, but any attempt to withdraw funds resulted in being locked out of their accounts or demands for nonexistent taxes and fees.
Adding a layer of cruelty to the crime, investigators discovered that the group operated a secondary recovery scam. After stealing millions from their targets, the criminals would reach out to those same victims under new guises, promising to retrieve their lost assets for another fee. This double dip ensured that people who had already lost everything were exploited once more while they were at their most vulnerable.
This latest crackdown follows a grueling three year investigation into an organization that estimated losses in the tens of millions of dollars. While officials have recovered roughly 300,000 dollars so far, they believe this server seizure is a critical blow because it prevents the scammers from simply launching new mirror sites to replace those already taken down. It marks another significant victory for Brooklyn’s financial crimes units, which recently secured a twelve year sentence for another local man involved in a separate sixteen million dollar Coinbase phishing plot.
